Made for extreme trails...

The VJ XTRM is made for rocky and technical trails where grip, stability, and durability are mandatory.

The aggressive lugs grip dirt, mud, rocks and anything you run on. The super tough upper is a custom kevlar and polyester weave which provides extraordinary protection and durability. The sole has cushioning units in the front and heel for comfort and a full length rock plate to protect you on tough terrain.

The XTRM was built for obstacle course racing, trail and sky running and swim run. Use it for tough, demanding terrain in all conditions. This shoe wants to get dirty.

  • Built on a medium last
  • 48% Kevlar and polyester blend upper
  • FitLock for mid sole stability
  • Cushioning units in front and heel
  • Fiberglass stability control
  • Full length rock plate in midsole
  • Outsole is 100% Butyl-rubber
  • Strengthened rubber toe-cap
  • Aggressive 6 mm lugs in outsole
  • 24mm/20mm stack height - Total with Lugs
  • 4 mm drop
  • Weight (US 8.5): 8.8 oz (250 g)

The XTRM seems to run true to size for length. Some have felt that the toe area is a little snug. Going up 1/2 size seems to be the perfect fix. If you are between sizes, go with the larger size.

New Shoes

It took me a while to get VJ XTRMs out on the trails, but now I have. Right out of the box I wore them for the Killington Spartan Sprint. Next up, I wore them for the Spartan Beast in New Jersey. In both cases the shoes performed great. They fit me true to size, did not require a break in period, and as advertised, the grip was outstanding. I look forward to a lot more racing with them.

XTRM to the test

This was my first time trying the VJ XTRM having been a longtime Salomon Speedcross customer. I was looking for a Spartan race shoe with a decent rock plate to help preserve the feet from the impacts of Beast and Ultra racing. While these are expensive in comparison, if they perform as taughted it would be well worth it! Here’s the verdict:

Shipment arrived in about 7 days from time of order. The item is well built with stitching, light weight material and lock lace tech. During my first couple runs, you can definitely notice the light weight aspect of the shoe which is nice. Fit was to size but just a tad small so if you are on the fence definitely go up a 1/2 size. I train on rocky single track trails and I did not feel that the rock plate was robust enough for me personally compared to the sole padding I get from my Salomon Speedcross. My feet were pretty sore after just 10 miles on this terrain but I’m slightly heavier at 187lbs and may just need to get used to them as these are definitely an adaptation period. I’ll be trying these at the Tahoe championships in a few weeks. Wish they had some other color options. Overall, quality materials but wish the sole was more protective with better rebound.
